  Synopsis-Banner-2

Misha, a successful banker, wonders why he doesn’t feel elated. His wife Sayuri has told him to leave home for a month to get his obsession with sex out of his system. Misha takes his guilt-free pass and heads to Mexico City.

There he meets a young woman unlike any other, in the most unlikely of places. She combines innocent idealism with a seemingly insatiable appetite for sex. His lust and heart pull him back to Mexico again and again, where he finds himself increasingly drawn to his young lover.

But as Misha’s month of freedom approaches its end, will he be able to tear himself away from the arms of this woman with whom he is falling in love? And is everything he believes about Sayuri actually true?

Then another woman enters Misha’s life — one who demands complete honesty. Or else.

Warning … This book contains numerous explicit situations (To quote a reader: “I thought my tablet would burst into flames.”) It is intended for adults only.

Meet-the-Author-Banner-2

My name’s Austin Briggs. I’ve spent over 10 years researching the history of the Aztec Empire and the Spanish Conquest with a dream of creating a historical fiction series that would fascinate readers who like a good history-based tale. I even went so far as to experience some of the magical rites of the ancient Mexica myself.

I’ve always been obsessed with learning about other cultures; in addition to my time in the lands that were once occupied by the Aztec peoples, I’ve also lived in Russia, Japan, England, Switzerland, Cambodia, Lithuania, and Uzbekistan.

I’ve been a soldier in the Russian army, an officer in the United Nations, and a global manager of a Fortune 10 company. I’ve been both a local and an outsider, a member of the majority and of a minority, which I feel makes me somewhat able to write from the perspective of multiple characters, all of whom have various levels of status and acceptance in their world.

We’re often told that history is written by the winners. My stories are told from the perspective of those who lost — though they went down fighting.

My fascination with the Aztec Empire during the time of the Spanish Conquest began because I’m intrigued by the idea of a society that is about to lose itself entirely. I wanted to show how difficult and painful — and sometimes strangely inspiring — that process can be.

Excerpt-Banner-2

She heard the sound of feet down the hall and knew her morning solitude was about to be broken. When Jack slid into the room laughing, she smiled in reaction until she saw his companion.

Logan.

The man brought about too many feelings to count. Dealing with him on half a cup of coffee was just not fair. And of course, he looked amazing. All that messy hair, his bedroom eyes, and the stubble he hadn’t shaved…how was a woman supposed to ignore all that beauty?

“Morning, Miss Meghan. How are you this morning?” Jack asked, drawing her attention away from Logan.

“I’m very fine indeed, Sir Jack.”

He giggled like he always did. “I am not a sir.”

She widened her eyes. “But you are the son of Angus, are you not?”

His smile grew. “I am.”

She looked up at Logan. “Good morning.”

“That’s your opinion,” he mumbled as he headed for the coffee. It was out of character for the artist. He’d always seemed to be in a good mood until the last few days.

“Did you wake Logan?” she asked Jack.

“Yes, but I needed to wake him. I had a dream,” he said sounding more like the solemn boy Maggie had told her about.

“Oh, don’t you know not to let dreams bother you.”

“Some of Jack’s dreams are premonitions,” Logan said as he placed his coffee at the head of the table. Where she liked to sit. Bugger.

“I understand. But, if they are premonitions, there is nothing we can do about it now.” Meg knew that better than anyone and had paid a steep price. She returned her attention to Jack. “So, Sir Jack, what would you like for breakfast?”

“I can get my own,” he announced.

Logan, for his part, had prowled over to the sideboard to get himself some food. As she had thought before, he hadn’t been what she would have pegged as a stereotypical artist. He had the look. But, his temperament had been one of well, a normal, every day person. Artists, and she had dealt with more than one in her day, tended to be moody and well, more trouble than they were worth. Meg didn’t like moody men. She liked them to be happy and somewhat needy because that’s how she had earned her living for so long.

Still, it was hard to ignore the way he moved, or those long, artist’s fingers as. She could just imagine what he could do with those. Lord, to feel them dance over her flesh …

Jack made a sound and he was looking at her strangely. Oh, bugger. The boy could definitely read thoughts from time to time.

“What else is on your mind this morning, Jack?” she asked as she sipped on her coffee.

He shrugged as he sat down to the table and started to eat his bacon. He chewed for a few seconds, then said, “Did you know that Logan sleeps without any clothes on?”

She choked, spewing a bit of her coffee. “Does he indeed?”

“Spilling all my secrets, Jack?” Logan asked.

“I didn’t know it was a secret. You have to tell me. Besides, Miss Meghan was thinking about …”

“Never mind about that, Jack. Get to eating,” she ordered, hoping Logan didn’t notice her blush.

From an early age, USA Today Bestselling Author Melissa loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since the publication of her first book in 2004, Melissa has had close to fifty romances published. She writes in genres from historical suspense to modern day erotic romance to futuristics and paranormals. Included in those releases is the bestselling Harmless series. In 2011, Melissa branched out into self-publishing with A Little Harmless Submission and the popular military spinoff, Infatuation: A Little Harmless Military Romance. Along the way she has garnered an epic nomination, a multitude of reviewer’s recommended reads, over five Capa nods from TRS, three nominations for AAD Bookies and regularly tops the best seller lists on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Since she spent her childhood as a military brat, Melissa swore never to marry military. But, as we all know, Fate has her way with mortals. She is married to now retired AF major and is raising her own brats, both human and canine. She spends her days giving in to her addiction to Twitter and spends her days thankful for their new home and the short trip to Wegmans.

Everyone has secrets. No one has secrets like Watts.

Catherine Kolb has found the perfect diversion from her life of nearly complete seclusion: a virtually anonymous correspondence with a man she knows only as “Watts.” Intelligent, intriguing, and with an insatiable appetite for sex, his words begin to draw her out of her closely guarded world.

Watts insists on privacy. He has no choice. In the wrong hands, his secrets could get people killed. Including him. And Catherine.

But curiosity and lust prove stronger than reason and safety. A planned one-time encounter sets into motion a series of events that bring Catherine and Watts to the edge of ecstasy and the brink of peril.

Two very private people. One risky night. A shot at love and redemption.

Due to mature themes, this book is recommended for readers 18+.

Excerpt …

I knew him only as “Watts.” Since we had an entirely email-based relationship, he said he preferred to keep it anonymous.

Once, when I asked if Watts was his first or last name, he wouldn’t say, and told me he would prefer that I didn’t force the issue. I promised him I wouldn’t ask again, not knowing at the time that I would break that promise and the consequence would be so harsh.

This was part of his “privacy code.” Actually, it was the most innocent part of his code, which I would eventually find out. For six months our contact was exclusively in the form of the written word. It was safe, which was what I wanted.

It was also stimulating in a number of ways, which was something I didn’t even know I needed until Watts entered my life.

His words alone—those seemingly simple black and white letters on a screen, strung together to form ideas—awakened in me something that I had no idea even existed: an aspect of my being that at times I thought was better left unexplored.

Excerpt-Banner-2

I giggle as he wraps his arm around my waist and tries to turn me around back toward our apartment. I twist out of his arms and keep walking toward the car. Footsteps and muttered grumblings behind me tell me that he’s following me.

I step to the side, and Shay’s arm reaches out to open my door. “Thank you, kind sir,” I say sweetly as I curtsy.

“Ha fucking ha. You’re going to pay for this. All I can think about is laying you out on the hood and devouring you for dinner. You can’t expect me to hold a coherent conversation when you look like that.”

“Mission accomplished then?” I smirk at him through the windshield as he walks to the driver’s side and hops in.

“Is the movie a requirement of this date night, cause I’m sure we could make a movie of our own.” He waggles his eyebrows at me suggestively, and I burst out laughing. Nothing that comes out of my man’s mouth can surprise me now. It’s one of the many things I love about him.

He pulls out of the driveway and soon we’re on the expressway heading south toward the restaurant. He holds his right hand out to me and I grab it and put it in my lap, making sure to rub his hand up my bare thigh, earning a growl.

“Tease,” he grumbles.

Synopsis-Banner-2

Ever,

These letters are often all that get me through week to week. Even if it’s just random stuff, nothing important, they’re important to me. Gramps is great, and I love working on the ranch. But…I’m lonely. I feel disconnected, like I’m no one, like I don’t belong anywhere. Like I’m just here until something else happens. I don’t even know what I want with my future. But your letters, they make me feel connected to something, to someone. I had a crush on you, when we first met. I thought you were beautiful. So beautiful. It was hard to think of anything else. Then camp ended and we never got together, and now all I have of you is these letters. S**t. I just told you I have a crush on you. HAD. Had a crush. Not sure what is anymore. A letter-crush? A literary love? That’s stupid. Sorry. I just have this rule with myself that I never throw away what I write and I always send it, so hopefully this doesn’t weird you out too much. I had a dream about you too. Same kind of thing. Us, in the darkness, together. Just us. And it was like you said, a memory turned into a dream, but a memory of something that’s never happened, but in the dream it felt so real, and it was more, I don’t even know, more RIGHT than anything I’ve ever felt, in life or in dreams. I wonder what it means that we both had the same dream about each other. Maybe nothing, maybe everything. You tell me.

Cade
~ ~ ~ ~

Cade,

We’re pen pals. Maybe that’s all we’ll ever be. I don’t know. If we met IRL (in real life, in case you’re not familiar with the term) what would happen? And just FYI, the term you used, a literary love? It was beautiful. So beautiful. That term means something, between us now. We are literary loves. Lovers? I do love you, in some strange way. Knowing about you, in these letters, knowing your hurt and your joys, it means something so important to me, that I just can’t describe. I need your art, and your letters, and your literary love. If we never have anything else between us, I need this. I do. Maybe this letter will only complicate things, but like you I have a rule that I never erase or throw away what I’ve written and I always send it, no matter what I write in the letter.

Your literary love,
Ever

CHAPTER ONE
SOMEWHERE OUT THERE
~ CADEN ~

It’s always the hands that mess me up. I can never get the fingers right, somehow. It’s something about the proportions between the knuckles, and the way the fingers are supposed to curve when at rest. I had an entire sketchbook full of failed attempts.

Even at that moment, in the passenger seat of Dad’s F-350, I was sketching out another attempt. My tenth so far, and we weren’t even to Grayling yet. This one was the best yet, but the middle knuckles of the last two fingers looked awkward, like they’d been broken.

Which gave me idea. I glanced over at Dad, who was driving with his left hand, the right resting on his thigh, fingers tapping to Montgomery Gentry on the radio.

“Dad?” A sideways glance and a raised eyebrow were the only acknowledgement I got. “You ever broke your fingers

“Yeah, broke most of my left hand, matter of fact.” Dad took the wheel with his right and showed me his left hand. The knuckles were bulbous, the fingers crooked. “Didn’t get ’em set right, so they’ve always been kinda fucked up.”

“How’d you break ’em?”

The fingers in question scratched at a shaved scalp, the stubble of a receding hairline whisking under his nails. “Me and your Uncle Gerry were out in the back forty, riding the fence line, checking for breaks. My horse got spooked by a snake. He threw me, ‘cept my hand was tangled in the reins. Dislocated most of my fingers. Then, when I hit the ground, his hoof landed on the same hand, broke the middle two pretty good. Your Gramps is a hardass, and I knew he’d wallop me good if I came back without the job done. So I set the broke fingers best I could. There was a busted fence post, see, way out at the far corner, and Dad’s prize Thoroughbred kept getting out. Gerry and I fixed the break and went home. I never told Dad about my fingers, just had my mom wrap ’em for me. Never really healed right, and even now when the weather’s shitty my hand aches.”

I’d heard the stories of my father’s childhood growing up on the Wyoming horse ranch that had been in the Monroe family for several generations. Every summer of my entire life had been spent on that ranch, riding and roping and tagging and birthing and breaking. Gramps didn’t accept excuses and didn’t tolerate weakness or mistakes, and I could only begin to imagine what it had been like growing up with Connor Monroe as a father.

Gramps was a tall, silver-haired, iron-hard man. He’d served in both Korea and Vietnam before returning to work the ranch. Even as his grandson, I was expected to pull my weight or go home. That meant up before dawn, to bed past sunset, the entire day spent out in the field or in the stables, rarely even sitting for lunch. At fourteen, I was tanned, muscled, and, I knew, hardened to the point of looking older than I really was.

Dad had been the first Monroe son to pursue a career away from the ranch, which had caused a decades-long rift between him and Gramps, leaving Uncle Gerry to take over running the ranch as Gramps got older. Dad left Wyoming after high school, moving to Detroit on his own to become an engineer. He’d started on the floor of a Ford plant, assembling truck frames and attending night school until he’d completed his degree, and eventually he’d been promoted to the engineering department, where he’d worked for the last twenty years. Despite his decades as an engineer, Dad had never really lost the wild-edged intensity of his upbringing.

“Why the questions about my fingers?” he asked.

I shrugged, tilted the drawing into his line of sight. “I can’t get these damn fingers to look right. The last two look messed up, and I can’t fix it. So I thought I’d make ’em look broken, on purpose.”

Dad glanced at the drawing and then nodded. “Good plan. The relationship between your angles and curves is off, is your problem. I’m more of a draftsman than an artist, but that’s my two cents.”

I made a surreptitious study of Dad’s broken fingers again, adjusted the knuckles on the pencil-rendered hand, making them look misshapen and lumpy, then worked on the tips of the last two fingers, curving them slightly to the left, zigzagging the fourth finger to resemble Dad’s. When I was done, I held up the drawing to show him.

Dad cut his eyes to the drawing and back to road several times, examining critically. “Good. Best one yet. The index finger still looks a little goofy, but otherwise good.” He punched a button on the truck’s radio, bypassing the commercial that was airing in favor of a classic rock station. He turned it up when Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” came on. “I think this summer art camp will be good for you. Interlochen is one of the best art schools in the country.”

I shrugged, bobbing my head to the beat, mumbling along with the lyrics. “It’s weird to not be going to the ranch.”

“Gramps’ll miss your help this summer, that’s for sure.”

“Will he be mad at me for not going?”

Dad shrugged. “He’s Gramps. He’s always mad about something or at somebody. Somethin’ to stew on gives him reason to get up in the morning, I think. He’ll get over it.”

“He didn’t get over you moving to Detroit,” I said, spinning my pencil between his fingers.

“True. But that’s different. Every Monroe boy since before the Civil War has lived and died on the ranch. I broke a family tradition going back a hundred and fifty year

Conversation faded after that, and I watched the road and the corn fields and the blue sky spotted by puffs of white, listening to Jimi Hendrix singing “Purple Haze” and twist the guitar strings into shrieking banshees. I-75 eventually was replaced by M-72, and I felt myself nodding off. A while later, I blinked awake and Grand Traverse Bay sparkled off to the left, a dozen sails flashing white in the distance.

“Thought we were going to Interlochen?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. The bay was farther north.

“No rush. Thought we’d grab some lunch before I drop you off. Ain’t gonna see you for a while, you know.”

We ate at Don’s Drive-In, a retro burgers-fries-and-milkshakes kind of place, small and cramped, red plastic-leather booths, chrome table edges, and black-and-white checkered tiles on the walls. We didn’t talk much, but then we rarely did. Dad was a reserved man, and I’m a lot like him. I was content to eat my burger and sip my shake, worrying internally about spending an entire summer around a bunch of artsy kids I didn’t know. I’d grown up around silent, hard-bitten cowboys, men who chewed tobacco and swore and could—and often did—go days without much more than a grunt or two. I knew I was a talented artist, as capable with pens and pencils as with paint. What I wasn’t good with was people.

“Don’t be nervous, son,” Dad said, apparently reading my mind. “Folks are folks, and they’ll either cotton to you or they won’t. That was my mom’s advice to me when I left for Detroit. Just be you. Don’t try to impress anyone. Let your work stand for itself.”

“This isn’t like school,” I said, dragging a fry through ketchup. “I know where I fit there: alone in the corner, with my notebook. I know where I belong on Gramps’s ranch. I know where I belong at home. I don’t know where I belong at an arts camp.”

“Wherever you are is where you belong. You’re a Monroe, Caden. That may not mean shit to anyone else, but it should mean something to you.”

“It does.”

“Well, there you go.” Dad wiped his fingers with a napkin and sat back. “Look, I get it. I grew up surrounded by thousands of acres of open land, all hills and horses, rarely seeing anyone but Mom and Dad, Gerry, and the other hands. Even school was the same kids from kindergarten to graduation. I knew everybody in my world, and they knew me. When I moved to Detroit it was scary as hell. Suddenly I was surrounded by all these buildings and thousands of people who didn’t know me or give a shit about whether I made it or not.”

“People confuse me.”

“That’s cause most people don’t make a damn lick of sense, if you ask me. Women especially. Trick with women is to not try and figure them out. You won’t. Just accept ’em as they are, and try to go with the flow. Good advice for life in general, really.”

“Do you understand Mom?”

Dad let out a rare laugh, but I didn’t miss the way the corners of his eyes tightened. Things had been strange and tense around the house lately, but neither Mom nor Dad was the type to talk about what was bugging them. “I’ve known your mother for twenty-five years,” he said, “and been married to her for twenty-two. And no, I still don’t understand her. I know her, I get her, but I don’t always understand the way her mind works, how she comes up with ideas or arrives at her conclusions or why she changes her mind so goddamn much. Makes my head spin, but that’s how women are and that’s how she is and I love her for it.”

All too soon, Dad was paying the bill and the truck doors were slamming and we were hauling down US-31 toward Interlochen. The ride was quick, and then Dad was parking and unstrapping my duffel bag from the bed of the truck and handing it to me. We stood toe to toe, neither of us speaking or moving.

Dad pointed to the rows of tiny wooden cabins. “That’s the cabins. You know which one you’re in?”

“Yeah, number twenty.”

“Alright then. Well, guess I’ll be going. Gonna be a long drive without you snoring in the passenger seat.”

“You’re just turning right back around and driving home?” I asked, then immediately hated how childish and whiny that had sounded.

Dad lifted an eyebrow in reproach. “You’re here for three weeks, Cade. You expect me to sit on the beach and twiddle my thumbs for a month? Your mom needs me home, and I’ve got projects to finish at work.”

I felt the question bubbling up, coming out, and couldn’t stop it from emerging. “Is—is everything okay? With you and mom?”

Dad closed his eyes briefly, breathed in slowly and let it out, then met my eyes. “We’ll talk when you get home. Nothing for you to worry about right now.”

That sounded oddly like an evasion, which was entirely out of character for my gruff, straight-talking father. “I just feel like things are—”

“It’s fine, Caden. Just focus on having fun, meeting new people, and learning. Keep in mind that this is three weeks out of your entire life, and you don’t ever have to see these people again.” Dad stuck his left hand into his hip pocket and wrapped his right arm awkwardly around my shoulders. “I love you, son. Have a good time. Don’t forget to call at least once, or your mom’ll have a hairy conniption.”

I returned the embrace with one arm. “Love you too. Drive safe.”

Dad nodded and turned back toward his truck, then stopped and dug into his back pocket. He pulled out a folded square of $20 bills and handed them to me. “Just in case.”

“I’ve been saving my allowance,” I said. Dad always expected me to earn money, never gave it for free.

“It’s…just take it.”

I stuffed the money into my hip pocket and shifted my weight. “Thanks.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.” I waved once, and watched Dad drive away.

I’d spent months at a time away from my parents, lived on Gramps’s ranch for months at a time. Goodbye was nothing new. So why did this one feel so unsettling?

Hey my happy reader peeps … guess what? Today is a special day here at Zany PNR Addict and that’s because Heather Long is taking over!! She’s here to give us further insight behind a special set of books to her Always a Marine series and how she incorporated some of our most favorite holidays this time of year. Take it away Heather! …

A Marine of Plenty Thanks, Zany, for having me today. I have been really excited about this set of the Always a Marine series since I first broached it with my editor last year. I had so many ideas, I didn’t know what to do with them all and yeah, I know—the holidays lend themselves to story ideas. In publishing, however, you do have to work a little ahead of the curve in order to get the books finished in order to release at the holidays.

Of course, I had also think about what holiday, or holidays, I would feature. From October 1 onward, we have a whole host of holidays to pick from. It’s actually one of my favorite times of year because, really, who doesn’t like the party?

A Candle For A MarineI knew I had to do a Hanukkah book, period, end of story. There just aren’t enough Hanukkah romance books out this time of year. Christmas was, absolutely, another no-brainer. I actually thought about doing a Halloween story, but Halloween isn’t a warm and fuzzy holiday. Or maybe I just don’t celebrate it that way.

So, knowing I had to do Hanukkah and Christmas, I looked at the other holidays in and around the same timeframe and wondered which holidays invited time spent with family, friends, and loved ones. Which of these holidays is it most painful to be away from those you care about? Or, conversely, which of these holidays open you up to the promise of possibilities?

Marine Under the MistletoeWinter Solstice is the longest night of the year. It is the pinnacle of the cold in the dark—the day after is celebrated because you survived the longest night of the year. What greater metaphor for one of my Marines coming home could I find? There was a conflict—the Wiccan tenet of ‘an it harm none’ versus being a Marine in combat. Yes, this absolutely made my list of holidays I wanted to explore.

Thanksgiving made my list and took us to Afghanistan because, well, I did not grow up celebrating that holiday. It is in so many ways a deeply American holiday. It’s not about gifts and it’s not about purchases—except on Black Friday and now this year with everybody starting your sales early, but that’s not my point. Thanksgiving is about togetherness, no matter where you are or who you’re with. So, yes, it definitely made the list.

Marine ChristmasSince I was doing it as a series of five I needed one more. What better way to crown the message of being together, forgiveness, miracles, and love than with a fresh start in the New Year?

I have been asked why I did not do Kwanzaa. It was not a deliberate oversight nor do I think it did not have value. I had to pick five. I picked the five I did and I don’t know enough about Kwanzaa to do it justice. Not yet.

Remember, the best part of the holidays? They are an annual event. What’s your favorite holiday this time of year?

She never stopped grieving …

It’s New Year’s Eve, and thirty years since Brenda Connors buried the only man she ever loved. Every year on the anniversary of his death, she finds herself in the hospital, suffering from chest pains. No matter how expected, it always takes her breath away. This year…this year she wants it to be different and takes the advice of her best friend and would be sister-in-law to sign up for a one-night stand. It seems ridiculous, just a year shy of her fiftieth birthday to try and seek happiness she long since gave up on. She never imagined a stern faced Marine with talent for making her laugh.

He doesn’t know what the future holds …

Married to his career and facing forced retirement, Major Tom Baxter doesn’t see much of a future for himself in civilian life. A poker game with the son of an old friend earns him some unwanted advice, but it’s advice he can’t get out of his head. He signs up for a one-night stand, to discover what life on the outside might have to offer. The last thing he expected was an elegant soul with a streak of mischief.

Ringing in a new beginning …

Can Tom and Brenda make every second of their countdown to midnight count, lest old Marines be forgot?

heather3-159x300National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.

Their table sat in an alcove that also doubled as a private balcony and overlooked a lit garden. According to his hostess, he and his date would also be able to see the fireworks over Dallas later should they still be at their table at midnight. If not, then their reserved suite also had a balcony and a good vantage point. A marble-floored hallway led to their dining table and though the alcove was simply one of several such isolated settings, theirs possessed heavy cream curtains that could be closed to afford them further privacy.

Overall, it was an excellent choice on Luke’s part. Fortunately, years of not doing much with his salary meant Tom could also afford the evening comfortably. He finished the cup of coffee and checked his watch. Fifteen minutes to operation launch and he heard heels tapping on the marble floor caught his attention. Glancing sideways, he spotted a pair of elegant, long legs. Trailing his attention upward, he studied the woman approaching.

The body-hugging sheathe of a dress molded her curves, and what a shape she had…. Dark hair brushed her shoulders, the silvery streaks amidst the deep brown seemed almost artistic. Straightening, he frowned when she hesitated and checked her phone. The curl of anticipation in his gut flattened out.

It didn’t matter if the elegant woman searched for another date; he couldn’t take his attention off her. She all but glared at her phone. A heartbeat later, she rewarded his captivation when her exasperation transformed into sparkling laughter.

Squaring her shoulders, she lifted her chin and their gazes collided. Her smile faltered for a heartbeat, then warmed. At her look, he rose to his feet and enjoyed her long walk down the hall.

“Ms. Connors.” He extended his hand automatically, her smooth palm gliding against his.
A hint of shyness softened her expression, but she didn’t look away. “Mr. Baxter. Can I just say that you chose the loveliest spot for dinner?”

Boosted by the compliment and her lovely manner, he inclined his head. “Only if you’ll allow me to say that you outshine the location—and then some.” He’d never really been that good with flowery compliments, but a hint of color bloomed over her cheeks and he let out a breath. “Here….” To pull out her seat meant he had to let go of her hand.

She had slender fingers, beautiful and tapered, and they’d been silky-soft with the barest hint of callouses on her index fingers and thumbs. Callouses that meant she used tools, but probably didn’t build or work with anything. His brain’s need to catalog details had proven a godsend in the field, but he didn’t need to pick apart his date.

“Thank you,” Brenda murmured and slipped around him to take the chair he held out and he scooted it in just as she sat. From his vantage point, he had a direct view of her cleavage and the teasing hint of a dark mole on the curve of her right breast.

Clearing his throat, he moved back to his seat. “Of course.”
